| The Dog/Puppy Rescue Transport is an amazing program developed by Erin Tierbee and HSCC leader
Barbe Shackelford. There are animal rescue groups in other areas (Northern
Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, etc...) that are willing to accept
transfers of dogs/puppies from our humane society. They let us know which
animals they want, and pay a fee to cover the vet expenses the animals
have incurred and a pull fee to HSCC.
About every week (usually on Saturday mornings) the transport occurs.
Dogs and puppies are loaded into a vehicle, and a HSCC volunteer drives
the first leg of the journey... then meets up with the next volunteer
driver to transfer the dogs to that vehicle... and so on... until the dogs
arrive at the destination rescue organization. These rescue groups have already or
find good homes for the dogs/puppies.
Volunteers need to be able to drive to the Campbell County Animal Control Facility in Rustburg to meet
the HSCC leader at approximately 7:30-8:00 a.m. (You will be contacted with the
exact time to meet the leader the day before the transport.)
Volunteers duties will include:
- walk all the dogs (they need to potty before the trip),
- assist in loading the vehicle, and
- drive the dogs/puppies on the first leg of the journey to the next meeting point.
We usually go to Lexington (1-1.5 hours one way) or Richmond (2 hours one
way). If anyone is traveling north at other times, we can coordinate a transport then as well.
IMPORTANT! If you sign up for this volunteer opportunity, you absolutely
must be there and on time. No shows or being late will make things very
difficult. Please keep this in mind when deciding whether you can help.
If you can help with the rescue transport or if you would like to be notified about future transports
please contact Cindy Schott.
If you cannot drive but would like to help out, here is a list of what is needed:
- Van (have to ask)
- Gas $ or gas cards
- 5 duffle bags for transport kits
- newspaper
- water
- bowls
- paper towels
- bungee cords
- cleaning wipes
- Animal carriers
